Bonne grimpe

Seen as winter has quickly started making itself felt (none of that "winter is coming" shite here, winter doesn't come here, it just arrives - one day its 25°C plus and the next its 6°C, I decided the next thing to investigate should probably be indoors. I have heard stories of it getting to minus 25°C the year before last which ain't so good for outdoor sports!

One thing I will have trouble with during this time is keeping up my fitness, especially upper body. It's easy enough to go for a run etc when its freezing but many of the outdoor sports that I do (kayaking, sailing) just aren't practical when it gets that cold and I have never liked the idea of going to the gym. You just sit there doing reps while you're brain is just like derpy derp, I get that some people like it and you can see your improvements visibly but it just isn't my thing.

Which is why indoor rock climbing came to mind, you have to use a combination of your muscles, balance and brain to solve the problem and get to the top. At the same time its indoors warm and a great way of meeting people.

The first few searches were a bit frustrating as it usually involves joining a club, paying a huge fee up front for the year (which is a problem for my broke-ass) and induction training which is why I really liked the idea of bouldering.

Bloctrotters in Argonay was the one I ended up picking because you just pay your money, put on the shoes and you can get on the wall -straightforward, no hassle. Renting shoes here helps their pitch (€2.50),and these shoes also smell!, really good! This is an area places can fall down is the state of thier rented equipment but not these guys.  .

The owners are friendly and very approachable, they even gave me some cool stickers! There is something for everyone here with their difficulty rating stretching from beginner (yellow) to expert, a very aptly named "mutant" (white) and the whole time they make climbing chalk available to you for free!

What I loved about this place was the atmosphere here! You can clearly see everyone here is passionate about climbing, it's evident in their smiles and how everyone encourages each other.

The space is really well used with a main downstairs climbing area and bar, upstairs climbing area with (what I think is) a fingerboard area.

There is a unisex changing area with toilets and even a shower!

There is also a little bar area where you can have a nice chilled beer and get advice from the owners and fellow climbers, they do lots of competetions and social events during the year so keep and eye on their  Facebook page.

Getting there

The bouldering gym is located in Argonay about 10 minutes outside Annecy by car, see the map below.

By public transport you have to take the number 9 and get of just after lycée Lachenal which takes about 15 minutes and then walk for about 8 minutes.

-General note on public transport in Annecy. For the most part the buses are on time and regular during school times but after the Noctibus comes into service you have to be careful with times. I would advise you to pick which bus you're getting especially if you're going back in to town you may be in for a wait (think more than an hour) or a very long walk in the cold!

The small commune of Argonay is  a beautiful little place to visit, so nice I decided to take a few pictures of it!

What to bring

Bring clothes you don't mind getting hot and sweaty in, it is a very intense sport and you do get very warm! I usually wear shorts and a light t-shirt that can wick away sweat fast! I would advise you to bring your own socks and a bottle of water also. Taking water breaks to relax and keep you hydrated will improve your performance

-pro-tip: having a snack at the end of the session will help you recover faster -think proteins and carbs!
